Announcing Tara Ammas scholarship for STEM students 1 scaled

Towards Equal Foundation is proud to announce the launch of Tara Amma’s Scholarship — a tribute to the remarkable life and legacy of H.L. Tara (1931–2025), affectionately known as Tara Amma. This annual scholarship is designed to support meritorious STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students from underprivileged backgrounds, helping them pursue their academic aspirations with financial and mentoring support.

The scholarship reflects Tara Amma’s enduring belief in the power of education. Her words, “Nanage Vidya Preethi” (I love learning), symbolize a life devoted to nurturing a passion for knowledge in her children, grandchildren, and the wider community. Despite limited means and societal norms that often overlooked the education of girls, Tara Amma was a quiet revolutionary who ensured that all three of her daughters were educated — one of whom went on to become an IAS officer. Her legacy of perseverance, equality, and excellence lives on through this initiative.

Craft Empowers, Connects, Evolves Through Generations and Gives a Voice!

In the quiet village of Sittlingi, Tamil Nadu, the women of Porgai have been weaving stories of empowerment through the intricate art of Lambadi hand embroidery. Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Lalitha Regi, this women-led artisanal society, established in 2006, has not only preserved a traditional craft but has also helped the women rediscover their pride and dignity—Porgai, as it is called in Lambadi.

For the first time, these artisans are stepping beyond India’s borders to share their creations with the world. Their journey takes them to IOTA’24 in Perth, Australia, from 16th to 25th August, where their works, curated by the talented Anshu Arora, will be showcased to an international audience.

This remarkable opportunity is a direct outcome of the Artist Residency project run in 2023 at Sittilingi enabled by a grant from Towards Equal Foundation (TEF). During this project, the women of Porgai created stunning hand-embroidered tapestries, a process that was as much about personal growth as it was about artistic expression. The days spent together embroidering, singing, and collaborating ignited a newfound awareness of their creative potential, leaving a lasting impact on all involved.

Their journey serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative nature of art and craft, not only as a means of preserving cultural heritage but also as a catalyst for empowerment and connection

Towards Equal Foundation, which has been a steadfast partner to Porgai since 2018, played a crucial role in enabling this project. The foundation’s commitment to fostering equality and supporting underrepresented voices in the arts has made this moment possible.

As the women of Porgai prepare to share their art with the world, we invite friends in Perth to join in person and cheer on this incredible talent. For those in India, there will be opportunities to purchase Porgai art—whether on cushions, throws, blouses, jackets, or other items—when they exhibit near you.

Let’s continue to support and celebrate these remarkable artisans as they carry forward a legacy of creativity, empowerment, and pride.

Towards Equal Foundation Commits to Building Nocturnal Wildlife Rehabilitation Enclosure in Partnership with PfA Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Centre

At Towards Equal Foundation (TEF), we stand firm in our commitment to wildlife conservation and rehabilitation. Today, we are thrilled to share an exciting development in our longstanding collaboration with PfA Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Centre. For over six years, we have worked hand in hand with PfA, witnessing their unwavering dedication to rescuing and rehabilitating urban wild animals in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.

It is with great pleasure that we announce our support for PfA’s proposal for a “Nocturnal Wildlife Rehabilitation Enclosure.” This initiative marks a significant step forward in our collective efforts to provide optimal care for nocturnal wildlife species in need.

The Proposal in Detail

The proposed enclosure aims to address the specific needs of nocturnal animals, providing a safe haven for their rehabilitation and eventual release back into their natural habitats. From slender lorises to barn owls, scops owls to Indian flying foxes, the enclosure will cater to a diverse array of nocturnal species, ensuring they receive the specialized care they require.

Key Features of the Enclosure

The enclosure will boast carefully designed features tailored to the needs of its inhabitants. Ample space for flight, climbing structures, appropriate substrate, and controlled lighting and temperature settings will create a conducive environment for rehabilitation. Additionally, enrichment activities will be incorporated to stimulate the animals both mentally and physically, aiding in their recovery process.

The Importance of Nocturnal Wildlife

Nocturnal wildlife play indispensable roles in maintaining the delicate balance of ecosystems. Owls serve as natural pest controllers, while bats are essential pollinators and insectivores. Asian palm civets contribute to seed dispersal, and wild hares support predator populations. By rehabilitating these species, we not only safeguard their well-being but also uphold the ecological harmony they contribute to.

TEF’s Commitment

The establishment of a dedicated nocturnal wildlife rehabilitation enclosure represents a significant milestone in our shared mission to protect and preserve wildlife. Through our collaboration with PfA Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Centre, we are honored to be part of this transformative initiative. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter future for nocturnal wildlife in Bengaluru and beyond.
