We sincerely thank Towards Equal Foundation for their generous support towards our Reptile Conservation Project. Your continued encouragement has significantly strengthened our capacity to respond effectively to reptile emergencies and ensure the safe rescue, treatment, rehabilitation, and release of these often-misunderstood species.

Over the past three months, our team has successfully rescued more than 900 reptiles, representing a wide diversity of species commonly affected by urbanisation, habitat fragmentation, and increasing human–wildlife conflict. The rescued species include:

Banded Kukri Snake (2), Barred Wolf Snake (1), Bengal Monitor Lizard (1), Bronzeback Tree Snake (4), Buff striped Keelback (1), Checkered Keelback (19), Common Sand Boa (3), Common Trinket Snake (21), Common Wolf Snake (20), Indian Chameleon (1), Indian Flapshell Turtle (14), Indian Pond Terrapin (14), Indian Python (1), Indian Rat Snake (271), Indian Star Tortoise (14), Oriental Garden Lizard (1), Russell’s Kukri Snake (2), Russell’s Viper (108), Saw scaled Viper (1), Spectacled Cobra (418).

In the past month alone, we have rescued approximately 50 reptiles, clearly highlighting the constant and growing demand for rapid response, specialised handling, and professional rehabilitation facilities.

The support from Towards Equal Foundation has enabled us to undertake several crucial interventions, including:

  • Safe and humane rescue of both venomous and non-venomous reptiles

  • Emergency treatment and medical stabilisation

  • Temporary housing, care, and continuous monitoring

  • Scientific and ethical release into suitable natural habitats

  • Active reduction of human–reptile conflict through safe intervention and awareness

Through Project Slither Safe, your partnership has directly contributed to saving hundreds of reptile lives while fostering coexistence, compassion, and ecological responsibility within urban and peri-urban communities.

Towards Equal Foundation Commits to Building Nocturnal Wildlife Rehabilitation Enclosure in Partnership with PfA Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Centre

At Towards Equal Foundation (TEF), we stand firm in our commitment to wildlife conservation and rehabilitation. Today, we are thrilled to share an exciting development in our longstanding collaboration with PfA Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Centre. For over six years, we have worked hand in hand with PfA, witnessing their unwavering dedication to rescuing and rehabilitating urban wild animals in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.

It is with great pleasure that we announce our support for PfA’s proposal for a “Nocturnal Wildlife Rehabilitation Enclosure.” This initiative marks a significant step forward in our collective efforts to provide optimal care for nocturnal wildlife species in need.

The Proposal in Detail

The proposed enclosure aims to address the specific needs of nocturnal animals, providing a safe haven for their rehabilitation and eventual release back into their natural habitats. From slender lorises to barn owls, scops owls to Indian flying foxes, the enclosure will cater to a diverse array of nocturnal species, ensuring they receive the specialized care they require.

Key Features of the Enclosure

The enclosure will boast carefully designed features tailored to the needs of its inhabitants. Ample space for flight, climbing structures, appropriate substrate, and controlled lighting and temperature settings will create a conducive environment for rehabilitation. Additionally, enrichment activities will be incorporated to stimulate the animals both mentally and physically, aiding in their recovery process.

The Importance of Nocturnal Wildlife

Nocturnal wildlife play indispensable roles in maintaining the delicate balance of ecosystems. Owls serve as natural pest controllers, while bats are essential pollinators and insectivores. Asian palm civets contribute to seed dispersal, and wild hares support predator populations. By rehabilitating these species, we not only safeguard their well-being but also uphold the ecological harmony they contribute to.

TEF’s Commitment

The establishment of a dedicated nocturnal wildlife rehabilitation enclosure represents a significant milestone in our shared mission to protect and preserve wildlife. Through our collaboration with PfA Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Centre, we are honored to be part of this transformative initiative. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter future for nocturnal wildlife in Bengaluru and beyond.

PFA and TEF’s decade long partnership for causes related to Birds, Animals & Environment

In the face of rising instances of bird injuries caused by manja and other hazards, a sanctuary named “Whistling House” has emerged as a beacon of hope for parakeets in distress. Situated within the People for Animals Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Centre, this sanctuary, generously donated by the “Towards Equal Foundation,” represents a significant step forward in wildlife rehabilitation efforts.

The Towards Equal Foundation (TEF) stands as a testament to the power of philanthropy and compassion. A private Foundation (www.tef.life) is deep rooted in its belief that we human beings have to share our planet and are the only species with the power to protect. That makes it our responsibility to look out for ways to save nature and her creations.

The Whistling House sanctuary provides a safe haven for parakeets rescued from various perils, including confinement in fortune tellers’ cages, entanglement in manja threads, and encounters with electric wires. Tailored care and rehabilitation programs enable these birds to recover from injuries, regain their flight capabilities, and reconnect with their natural instincts. In instances of severe mistreatment, such as feather plucking, the centre conducts specialized procedures like feather implantation to aid in the birds’ rehabilitation process.

Designed to prioritize the well-being of its avian inhabitants, the Whistling House offers spacious enclosures, engaging enrichment activities, and ample exposure to natural sunlight, all of which contribute to both physical and psychological recovery. Colonel Dr. Navaz Shariff, Chief Veterinarian at PfA Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Centre, underscores the centre’s commitment to providing comprehensive care for these magnificent birds. Every aspect of the sanctuary has been meticulously planned to facilitate the birds’ recovery, with separate areas designated for short-term confinement and observation.

Since January 2024, PfA has rescued nearly 2,000 parakeets belonging to five different species. The success of the rehabilitation efforts is evident in the increasing numbers of parakeets released back into the wild. In 2022, 138 parakeets were rehabilitated and released, a number that rose to 176 in 2023, showcasing the efficacy of initiatives like the Whistling House sanctuary.

Dr. Shariff highlights the myriad benefits offered by the sanctuary, including specialized activities to aid in complex recoveries, exposure to essential Vitamin D facilitated by a partly transparent roof, and continuous ventilation to ensure a healthy environment. Moreover, eco-friendly materials and precautionary measures such as tape installation across glass surfaces further enhance the safety and well-being of the resident parakeets.
